“Winter River” and “River in the Snow” were both done on location in Colorado, the cabin I was staying in and working from was on the Rio Grande River. It was late winter, early spring when things start to thaw a little at a time but at any moment it could start snowing and freeze again. That was the case looking at the river from the banks and seeing patches of water breaking through the ice, tunneling its way underneath the fresh powder snow pack. This is one of my favorite themes, the idea of the serene quiet of snow and cleared palette of white, where everything is quiet and still and just below is the rush of thawing, thundering waters coming down stream.
