I am a contemporary abstract artist based in Sydney, Australia. I work with vivid colour and fluidity, using acrylic paint.
MessageI paint in an abstract expressionist style influenced by the movement of water and the relationship it has with all aspects of my life. I am so lucky to live by the ocean on the southern beaches of Sydney, Australia. Here I am constantly in awe of the ever changing seascape that appears daily. It is no great surprise then; when looking at my artwork to see this amazement deconstructed and laid bare.
The coast line has been an influencing factor in my life from childhood. Some of my earliest memories are that of being a little girl living in the North West of England. We would walk along the promenade that sat adjacent to the beach with its brown sand, looking out at the Irish Sea. The wind blowing so hard I would have to hold on tight to my mother's hand not to be blow away. The waves crashing against the rocks were so loud and I can still remember the chill. As a child my parents emigrated to Australia, which triggered a somewhat transient lifestyle. Always aspiring for a better life, this wandering flowed through into my adult life.
I have relocated often, internationally, interstate, the one constant though this roaming way has been water. The movement of water from the lapping of the waves at the shore to the sound of rain drops on a window pane, I have always been aware of the element of water. Which is why it has transferred to my art were I am able to really play with the water.
I studied a Visual arts degree and became a High School Art teacher who never taught. About 3 years ago, once established in life I decided to return to art and through a self taught process developed the style I am using now, a deconstruction of large bodies of water that I see around me all the time.
My work has a coastal vibe at home anywhere. As I use gravity as my brush to represent bodies of water that bring a sense of calm to people. I am intrigued and excited every time I step in front of the canvas to see what new pathways the paint will take, as the pigment follows its own journey down the canvas, not unlike a raindrop down a window pane. I am drawn to the uniqueness of the moment that will never be repeated, it will never be the same again, very much like my art.
My work is about reflection, movement, colour and mood.
Statement
I am a self-taught contemporary abstract artist based in Sydney, Australia who paints with vivid colour and fluidity, using acrylic paint. I am forever experimenting and evolving as an artist, I am motivated by the everyday that is then reinterpreted through my work. Journeys far from home or walks close by inform all that I do. My positive nature is evident in my use of a bright strong colour pallets along with my unique style of conveying movement within my work.
