Susan Wellingham
Biarra 4313, Queensland
I am an Australian artist working with watercolours mostly to create a magical response to the world around me.
MessageSusan lives on a property near the town of Esk in the beautiful Somerset Valley in Queensland. The rural vista provides her an endless palette for creativity. Susan paints in a loose, whimsical style, creating a suggestion rather than a true representation. She uses watercolours with lots of water to create her dreamy impressions. The colours blend on the paper producing magical and unexpected results.
Statement
I am driven by my love of nature and strive to capture artistically, the imperfect, evocative and also the fragile moments seen.
The unpredictable nature of watercolour allows for the freedom and spontaneity needed to create my paintings. It suits my loose style, where ample water is used to encourage colour flow, gentle mixing and layering. Delicate strokes are then added to help create an atmospheric end result. My work often displays a whimsical narrative regarding encounters with animals and birds. Looking into the artwork, it is hoped the viewer will recognise the quirkiness, the twinkle in the eye or feel a spark of wonderment. Above all, I hope there is joy.
