Susan K. Theroff is primarily a self-taught artist working in graphite, acrylic and watercolor. She focuses on capturing the magic of nature through art. Most of her work focuses on birds, insects, & plants. Susan has also created work focused on the human figure utilizing nature symbolism and mythology to create a narrative.
Her work is shown locally between Topeka and Lawrence, Kansas through various art shows, local galleries and can also be viewed on her website as well as various social media platforms.
Susan describes herself as an eternal optimist who finds strength and renewal in nature. Susan resides on a small farm with her family in Northeastern Kansas where she maintains a studio practice as well as hosting creative workshops & farm tours for the local community.
Statement
My work focuses on the natural world, its birds, insects, plants, & the symbolic meaning to humans. A lot of my work explores the collections of natural items individuals often pick up when on nature walks. I have found that these collections represent the individuals desire to feel a continued connection to time spent in nature- a memory of how it made them feel.
I compare the natural world to a tapestry. Every little thread is vitally important in supporting the larger picture. If you begin to pull out even the smallest threads the picture begins to weaken & fall apart. The natural world has many small threads that humans often take for granted or are unaware of its importance in maintaining biodiversity.
Art gives voice to nature. It is a universal language creating new ways in which to see nature in another light. Visually demonstrating the importance of relationships that exist between even the smallest plants, insects & birds can remind us of the importance of how a diversity of voices can bring stability to the larger picture. We find ourselves mirrored in the natural world.
