Harlequin Huddle – Artist Statement
This hand-drawn image is inspired by early 20th-century carnival and theatrical costume photographs, then printed as a cyanotype. The child and the small dog wear matching harlequin outfits, while the larger dog is a harlequin-marked breed, patterned in black and white by nature. I’m interested in how pattern and dress turn all three into “performers” before they do anything at all, and how quickly we accept costume—or even a coat of fur—as a kind of role.
The child and dogs gathered in stillness, linked not only by their costumes but by an underlying sense of unity and subtle emotion. The jester patterns and theatrical costumes add a surreal, performative layer, but the title grounds it in tenderness and intimacy.
