I was prompted to create this piece when my mom gave me a Brobdingnagian jar of buttons. It celebrates a typically unappreciated functional and yet complicated object, the button. Size, shape, aesthetic, material and attachment to a garment all factor into how a button is designed and placed. Is the intent to be showy? Is it to simply be usable or relay a message of status or affection? People intentionally removed and kept these practical objects for generations. These buttons would prompt memories of family, or events, or places in which the garment was worn. They acted as seeds and heirlooms of the family storyteller and historian.
