Susan Grucci
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
The longer I Paint, Print, Draw and Photograph, the more I discover.
MessageFor many years, before moving to Manhattan from Brooklyn, I concentrated on traditional landscapes in a large format. I used my own photographs and sketches as the basis for my work. The transformation came after we bought our cottage at Hunter Lake - Parksville, N.Y. The fast pace New York City life and the slower pace in the Catskill mountains, took my creativity to a new and different level. Each place offering the best to work with. Also Photography has been one of my many passions throughout the years and I continue to photograph each day.
Besides the large canvas paintings, I added smaller canvases and a new technique. My new approach can either start with pencil applied directly to canvas or at some other point. I then use palette knife and brush or objects to create an abstract landscape...At 'that' point in the process I search for figurative suggestions and movement within the paint. Finally, in delicately rendered marks, I address the details of the landscape Unfailingly, music helps and guides me as I work.
I am very excited to be painting this summer 2023 working on a three canvas 4'x3' paintings of the surrounding vistas and mountains for a commission from the Lew Beach area.
My regular process requirers time. I find that I am spending many weeks on a relatively small 8x10 canvas in between painting larger paintings at the same time. Yet for me, the rewards are incalculably rich. Exhilarating freedom, confidence-inspiring command.
The many times I've spent at the Artist in Residency at Carter Burden/ L. Covello Mono Printing, in East Harlem, N.Y. has influenced my work in painting and printing my environment. Also, the process of sketching on a copper plate, for me is similar, in which I can spend much time adding to my original print. I now take my two printers 8"x11" and 2"x2" from Manhattan up to my Studio at Hunter Lake each season. Collage has become a go to medium for me for the last 5 years using my own prints to add to backdrop prints.

Statement
During 2019, I had the pleasure of traveling to colorful Zhuatanejo, Mexico - where I painted and drew the beauty of the land. The colors were illuminating and have worked their way into my Mono-Type Prints, as well as, my oil paintings.
My trip in 2016 to Barcelona, the South of France and to my ancestry home in Sicily helped to create a new mood and light in my Paintings and Mono-Types Prints.
As always, my travels in Europe and the Caribbean for over 25 years, provides inspiration. Yet much of my painting finds root in the time spent at the Catskills cottage that is my retreat from everyday life in New York City. Like the masters who challenge and inspire me, I strive to paint what I see in nature. Form, color, movement, texture, luminosity.
