I caught the golden backlight, highlighting these sheep, at the Countess of Warwick Show, in Essex in September. I think the mood captures everything we should treasure about our agricultural heritage - happy animals, treated with respect, out in the sunshine. The colours I used hint at the late days of summer, golden hay, siennas, yellows and blues. Painted in a loose, blocky style, this impressionistic portrait of the two sheep has a relaxed feel.
It is painted on a box canvas, with the sides painted in the same yellow ochre as the underlying ground of the painting, so it is ready to hang, or can be framed for a more formal look.
