I sliced a cantaloupe melon for breakfast and noticed how the sun, streaming through the window, was lighting up the melon like stained glass. I forgot breakfast for a while and grabbed my camera, capturing the memory from several angles, noticing the shadows on the granite surface.
I painted the juicy fruit in pure watercolour, glazing several layers to intensify the depth of colour in the flesh of the fruit, creating maximum contrast with the sunlit highlights. This was exaggerated further by adding a dark, neutral background with one fluid wash and using dry brush technique in the foreground to simulate granite patterns, partially visible beyond the reflections.
This painting was in the final selection of 60 in the SAA Artist of the Year 2018.
