Lines of the City
I’m drawn to the marks that guide us but often go unnoticed—the painted lines and colorful shapes that show us how we move through the city. Over time, they fade, chip, overlap, and take on a life of their own. Sometimes mistakes are made during painting that leads to unexpected results. What serves as a practical purpose becomes something abstract, expressive, and strangely beautiful.
In this series, I photograph those markings not as directions, but as compositions. I look for places where geometry meets accident—where a sharp edge of white cuts through asphalt, a cracked yellow line crosses the frame, where paint is unintentionally splattered. These feel like small conversations between order and impermanence, design and decay.
I pair the images as diptychs to explore how two fragments can transform each other. Together they form a rhythm—a kind of visual music born from the street. I love that these pairings slow the viewer down. They invite a second look, a pause to notice something we might otherwise step right over. Lines of the City is about finding structure and grace in the the overlooked, and in recognizing that beauty often appears where we least expect it.
Rounds Found Around
‘Rounds Found Around’ are images of discarded things I find on the street. This selection is categorized by their graphic nature and round shape. Included are rusted stove burners, weathered manhole covers, and crumpled pie pans. They are presented looking straight down, and I've paired them as having something in common with their partner; they make a stronger statement together than they would apart. Presented is the beauty in overlooked everyday objects, highlighting their textures, shapes, and the passage of time in urban environments.
Seeing Red
Red is my favorite color. The silver lining to the New York installing dedicated bus lanes on my neighborhood bus route (and taking away my beloved just-around-the-corner bus stop... and LOTS of parking spaces)... is that they painted these lanes red. Granted not as vibrant a red as shown in these images, but a pretty good proximity. Most of these pictures are of their process of painting these lanes, and I've included a few other ground surfaces that share the color red. These images are part of my broader ongoing series of things found on the ground.
