Giant Cuttlefish aggregate in the winter months of upper Spencer Gulf to breed, lay eggs and then, as they only live a couple of years, die. Due to overfishing the numbers of cuttlefish dropped dramatically and this lead to fishing bans. Fortunately the population has now recovered and due to this extraordinary aggregation Whyalla, the industrial town known as ‘Steel City’ due to its steel works and mining links, now receives visitors from all over the world.
