The History of the Rule of Law is a series of oil paintings chronicling the evolution of law in western civilization. These works grace the walls of the Rule of Law Gallery, located on the 11th Floor of the building, with the story beginning in the southwest corner and continuing clockwise around the room. The six 4-by-8 paintings created by artist Ron Anderson are on permanent loan from the Ohio State Bar Association.
Dethroning the Monarchy is the fifth painting in the series. It depicts a scene from the French Revolution, where hoards of citizens are in the process of attacking a group of aristocrats. They are beheading King Louis XVI while Napoleon is seen in the background on the right holding a crown above his head.
