Artist: Erwin Frey (American, 1892-1967)
Erwin Frey was born on April 21, 1892, in Lima, Ohio. He studied at Lima College for a year before he studied under Clement Barnhorn at the Cincinnati Art Academy. While in Cincinnati, Frey worked at the Rookwood Pottery Company before moving to New York, where he studied at the Beaux Arts Institute of Design and the Art Students League with James Earle Fraser. This was followed by a sojourn to Paris where he studied at the Julian Academy with Henri Bouchard and Paul Landowski. Frey’s works include the George Armstrong Custer memorial in New Rumley, Ohio, the Statue of William Oxley Thompson at The Ohio State University, and Christ after the Resurrection in the Franklin Commons Park. His other noted works include “The Blue Dancer” and “Isolt of the White Hands.”
