SUMO is a Luxembourg-based contemporary artist whose practice explores time, space, and visual memory through a layered graphic language rooted in graffiti, pop culture, and graphic design. Spanning more than three decades, his work began with graffiti in the mid-1990s and has since evolved into an interconnected visual universe rather than a series of isolated artworks.
Working primarily with painting and digital media, SUMO approaches each canvas as a fragment of a larger whole. Since 2013, his works collectively form what he refers to as the Sumoverse — an expanding system built through repetition, patterns, symbols, and recurring forms. The sphere or dot functions as a fundamental element within this language, structuring space and rhythm more deeply than any single character or motif.
Rather than aiming for aesthetic precision, his process is driven by structure, energy, and intuition, allowing imperfection, layering, and even destruction to become integral parts of the work. Each canvas acts as a record of time, with layers accumulating like entries in a visual journal.
At the core of his practice lies the ambition to create a large-scale video installation: an infinite zoom through the Sumoverse, connecting all works into a single immersive experience. Conceived as a piece that can be understood without words, it is intended to communicate ideas of scale, continuity, and perspective while remaining open to interpretation. Ultimately, SUMO’s work invites viewers to feel both grounded and small — momentarily aware of themselves within something vastly larger.
