Suzanne McNenly
Puslinch, ON
A minimalist landscape artist incorporating encaustic and precious metals to bring the vastness and wonder of the Canadian Rocky Mountains to life .
MessageSuzanne was born in the summer of her 24th year when she moved from Ontario to Calgary. Viewing the majesty of the Canadian Rockies from an airplane window she felt an immediate sense of home. That feeling of space and solitude never left her, even after her return to Ontario twenty years ago. After two decades in the investment industry, a sculpture course at The Alberta College of Art (now Alberta University of the Arts) was her first step towards developing the language to express her love of the silence and vastness of the Albertan landscape.
Suzanne's work is held in private collections all across North America, Europe and Australia. She has gallery respresentation and offers up a new series every year in person at The Artist Project in Toronto, selling out at the 2023 event.
Statement
Sue McNenly captures the expansive feeling of the Canadian landscape with 2D assemblages of watercolour and precious metals set in an encaustic base. Simple yet complex in origin, the works read as elegant paintings, inviting viewers to come close and engage intimately with the details, coming home to places they’ve never been. The results are minimalist pieces that belie their complicated origins, creating a feeling of calm wonder.
