Paper Chinese lanterns are released into the night sky and held afloat by the heat of a candle contained within. It is considered good luck to release a sky lantern, and many Thai people believe they are symbolic of problems and worries floating away. Chinese Lantern is also a species of flowering plant in the nightshade family. The delight of a Chinese lantern plant being its’ large, red-orange, inflated seed pod from which the plant gets its common name. This painting celebrates both occurrences of this phrase.
