Our planet is loud. Our idea of silence is just an inability to hear all of the noise around us, and true silence is only achievable in the vacuum of space. Not only do we fill the atmosphere with natural sounds: conversation, laughter, and crying, but our technology fills the air with sound we cannot detect. Our atmosphere buzzes with radio waves, our wifi signals, satellite communication beaming in from the outer layers, and so much more. If there were intelligent life in space with technology compatible with ours, our planet would be a sonic beacon. This is so incongruent with our conception of the atmosphere—a peaceful, silent, empty place. With “Atmospheric Influence,” I wanted to both evoke our conceived peace of the atmosphere with the gentle, blending colors of the sky, as well as the imperceptible business going on all around us. The patches of texture in an otherwise smooth painting give the sense of static, as on a TV screen, cutting through the atmosphere.
