Sarah Philips
QLD
My name is Sarah Philips (ASMA), I'm a freelance artist based in Brisbane. I specialise in watercolours, and mostly produce oceanic works and portraiture.
MessageAbout myself
I'm from the coastal city of Bundaberg, and am currently based in Brisbane, QLD. I have over a decade of experience with watercolours, and in recent years have taught myself oils and acrylics as well. My work largely focusses on the themes of connection, nature, and time.
Achievements
I am lucky enough to be an exhibiting member and Secretary for the Australian Society of Marine Artists. I have exhibited in several group and solo shows, predominantly in Brisbane but also in Sydney, Melbourne, Bundaberg and online, and was awarded a Tasmanian residency in 2022.

“Sarah’s workshop was a joy to attend. The set up was neat and professional with everything we needed at hand. The class was run at perfect pace - enough time to chat amongst our group but efficiently enough to hold everyone’s interest. Sarah is clearly a skilled and knowledgeable artist and guided us easily with her friendly manner, allowing options for us to challenge our capabilities or offer help where required. Many of us believed the piece to be above our skill level but Sarah was able to lead us all to produce a piece of art to be proud of.”
— Amie G.
Statement
My work mostly focuses on themes of connection, time and nature, especially the ocean. I was born and raised in Bundaberg- spending time on and by the ocean has probably influenced my work more than anything else. I try to show the beauty and fragility of both the natural world and the intangible world that exists between us, through themes of connection, nature and time.
I have been in practice “to the point of obsession” in my mother’s words, since I was about 11, and began working with watercolours in 2011. I officially started Studio Philips in 2021, and endeavour to expand it into a mentorship and apprenticeship program once my career is such that it can support this.
