This four-panel chronicle tells the tragic, yet hopeful, story of the American Bison. The series acts as a timeline, visually recounting the bison's great slaughter and their subsequent return to the plains. Throughout the work, Buffalo head nickels are embedded into the encaustic, serving as a visceral and poignant symbol of what was stolen—not just a great animal, but the very way of life of the Native peoples who lived alongside it. This painting is a testament to resilience, capturing the profound consequence of a broken past and the difficult, vital hope of a species brought back from the brink.
This encaustic painting on cradle board and is part of a larger project called Natural Consequences. This project aims to ask the question: Can a form of ancient art making confront A modern crisis? Through the elemental forces of fire and beeswax, Stevie’s luminous paintings give a voice to endangered wildlife and their vanishing habitats. This exhibition is a visual journey that reminds us that even the most timeless materials can tell our most urgent stories.
