I've been watching a handful of small, late October jalapeños ripening on the dining room table. One that had been almost blue green last night was bright red orange this morning, and that got me thinking about Wittgenstein thinking about primary colors. One of the ways painters think, of course, is painting. So this little piece made with three pigments -- a yellow, a red, and a blue -- is a meditation on Wittgenstein meditating on Goethe and the transition between green and red. The tomatoes are ripe, and these peppers are ready for a stir fry -- so this may be the last in the series for now. But after a springlike day, there are new blossoms on the plants -- and this is Chicago, so who knows what the weather will do? They'll be on my mind long after the first hard freeze, so there may be more come November.
