The Texas landscape around Caprock and Palo Duro canyons is breathtakingly beautiful (and it has a lot in common with the Canadian River breaks further north, closer to where I grew up). When I passed through recently on the way back from visiting my mother in Idalou, I drove up through Turkey on the eastern edge of the canyon. There was still a lot of cotton in the fields, and, when I started the painting, I was thinking of focusing on the contrast between the white fields and the red ones against the background of the red cliffs and blue sky. But I decided that would be a distraction from the embrace of earth and sky that, to my eye, is the main attraction here.
