Steven Charles Peabody, Born 11/14/1947 NYC, attended School of Visual Arts & Arts Student League 1968-73 majoring in Fine Art. There he was exposed to the Classical painting techniques of Underpainting & Glazing. Over the years he discovered a Cyclic Method which he could enter into at any phase without thinking or preplanning colors and could automatically paint, entering The Subconscious like The Surealists. After much practice using different subject prompts and the introduction of Meditation, the Shape and Translucency evolved into painting on oval plexiglass to empower the works with real light. These pictures have progressed along side of his Interior Design practice, with the goal of creating rounded or circular environments made with ambient luminous Artforms.
Statement
What I believe I’m trying to conceive has two main aspects. First, I’ve learned how to confront my subconscious mind with Art as a mirror. Using four different subject matters and their combinations: Realism, Sacred Geometry, Primal Drawing and Bio-morphism, with the goal of Transcendence within the creative process, I yearned to make the ‘Struggle Beautiful’. This brought me to the second obstacle; the borders of the square canvas. I did not see in squares so I first decorated the borders, then they became diamonds, then curves, and particularly the Peripheral Shape. With my eyes I followed my hands around to the farthest point of my Peripheral Vision. I saw that it was like a curved triangle , or fat egg shape. After making many of these on hardboard, I discovered painting on white translucent plexiglass was like painting with Light! Since Art School I had been painting with transparent underpainting and glazing, all that was needed was the elimination of opaque white.
In this last period I strive to empower myself & others with images that connect with Infinity & the Unknown, so I too continually evolve.
