A 1930's viaduct in late winter is demarcated in sunlight alluding to the welcoming warmth of spring, while also revealing the salt and grime that builds up over winter. I was inspired to paint this space after jogging underneath it over the years and observing the changing light and progressing decay. The title “Ben Jamin” was pulled from a misprinted street sign just north of the viaduct reading ‘BenJamin Ave’. It has since been corrected to ‘Benjamin Ave.’
After being selected by the City of Royal Oak in 2019 to be part of their Art Explored program, a reproduction was donated to the city in 2022. A ‘bunny’ yard-sign is an easter egg in the lower right, and pay’s homage to fellow ‘Art-Dad’ Carl Oxley III’s activism using graffiti to call attention to blight and safety concerns of viaducts throughout the city.
