Steve Miller
ROYAL OAK, Michigan
I tell imaginative, expressive, and award winning stories about the people, places, and things that intrigue me either with paint, or through songwriting.
MessageSteve Miller earned a BFA in Studio Art from the University of Oklahoma in 1995. Soon after he started working as an Art Director in Dallas and later in Chicago for multiple advertising agencies. During this time he continued developing his fine art practice. Then, in 2002, he moved to Michigan to pursue his art making career full-time. Since then, Miller has participated in over 70 solo, juried, group, print and online exhibitions across the country. His award winning paintings have been shown in commercial galleries, non-profit galleries, and alternative spaces. His artwork has been published in juried periodicals, written about in local newspapers, displayed publicly by organizations and municipalities, and collected and commissioned by strangers, friends, and family.
Miller has served as curator and juror to exhibitions in Southeast Michigan, and he teaches oil painting for the Atelier School of Art in both Royal Oak and Novi locations, while also serving as their Studio Coordinator.
When he has downtime, he loves hanging with his wife and nearly adult daughters. He also loves writing and performing music with his band Raccoon Dogs throughout the Detroit Metro.
Statement
Painting for me is about sharing personal stories and developing illusory spaces that are relatable yet inspire curiosity and wonder. Landscapes are my primary subjects, but I also paint interior spaces, waterscapes, cityscapes, and occasionally still life or portraiture—all to tell stories with themes relating to moments of transience.
———
My images are immersive interpretations that are often a combination of a natural color palette offset with expressive or hyper-exaggerated colors; or an interesting take on a perspective shift; or both! Observational awareness, craftsmanship, and self expression drive me to make art that is unique, resonant, and believable.
