I love exploring the spiritual gravity of forms and volumes, as well as the visual and tactile pleasures of surfaces.
MessageI was a professional classical guitarist before I became a potter in my mid-forties, and the transition was surprisingly seamless: The elements of music -- flow, rhythm, growth, articulation, repetition, contrast, gesture -- are also elements of satisfying physical form. The musician plays with them in sound and time, the potter/sculptor plays with them in clay and space. In both cases the underlying impulse -- and the urge to somehow render it -- is the same.
Statement
Just as the musician works a phrase to discover just the right flow and inflection, the potter works his curves to attain the form that awakens the spirit. The subtlest alteration can be the difference between a gesture that lifts the veil and one that is impotent. That's a mystery I do not tire of exploring.
