Stephanie Massaux is a contemporary New York–based artist specializing in abstract oil paintings, known for their dynamic textures and layered compositions. Born and raised in Manhattan, she studied fine art at the High School of Music & Art, Purchase College and the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and holds a BFA from F.I.T. in Restoration and Connoisseurship of Decorative Arts. Massaux previously worked in antique restoration and conservation, completing projects for the permanent collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her artwork has been featured in Elle Decor and Homes & Gardens and is held in private collections in the US, Europe, and Japan. She is represented by Armature Projects, a New York–based art consultancy connecting artists with architects, designers, and collectors, and Forsyth Art in Missouri, which champions innovative abstract and modern works.
Statement
Experimentation guides my practice as I explore oil paint and cold wax, layering color and texture to invite chance and discovery. Each mark records a moment in the painting’s evolution, revealing its history and transformation. My work emerges from the interplay of conscious and unconscious thought, the urban environment I inhabit, and the lingering impressions of memory and emotion. Drawing inspiration from American historical abstraction, my paintings develop a language of their own, intimate and contemporary, offering viewers a space to pause, reflect, and encounter the subtle rhythms and textures of lived experience.
