Steyning Relic
Granite, jasper & iron-stained chert, quartzite/cream flint, greenstone/slate, mixed river pebbles, inland sea-glass, azure-tinted resin
17 × 18.5 × 15 cm
Collected along the ancient paths near Steyning, this broken ring holds the feel of riverbeds and old shorelines. The stones are left largely raw; fragments of inland sea-glass remain clear—deliberately untouched—while an azure resin pool binds the arc and casts a cool, water-like light across the piece. It reads less as ornament than as a small survivor of ritual, a marker of layered time.
Stone map
• Granite — pink-flecked, crystalline pieces; mountain-born endurance.
• Jasper / iron-rich chert — russet and ochre fragments with warm earth tones.
• Quartzite / cream flint — pale, river-rounded pebbles recalling long transport by water.
• Greenstone / slate — blue-green, fissile plates suggesting altered seabed rocks.
• Mixed river pebbles — smoothed neutrals tying the arc together.
• Inland sea-glass — translucent greens kept uncoloured, a glint of a lost tide.
• Azure resin matrix — the binding, water-evoking field that stabilises the ring and deepens the hue.
