Wet felted merino, mohair, cashmere, curly locks, Wensleydale locks, wool nepps, silk tops, silk carrier rods, sari ribbon, habotai, velvet and chiffon silk, silk-wrapped and banana yarn, spun and bourette silk thread, and waste yarn on a backing of silk chiffon and cotton scrim
As with ‘Drift’ (made alongside ‘Linger’) late autumn snowfall, followed by clear, bright days gave a new glow to my usual walks, and this lane above Cromford Canal stopped me in my tracks. The aspect ratio meant that, for me, this piece was always going to be about the shadows on the ground. I gave myself license to experiment with detail in the colours, building rich layers of fibres and fabrics rather than getting too hung up on realism. As with ‘Drift’, I used a layer of silk chiffon to knock the background into the distance, with sketched branches rendered in permanent marker before adding the fabric to my work.
