Beth van Hoesen, Steve's Bear, 1996, colored pencil, graphite, and diamond dust, 14.63 x 11 inches, Lucile Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, West. Donated by the Adams and Van-Hoesen Adams Trust. A portrait of a bear that literally shines thanks to its unusual embellishment of diamond dust.

As quoted in "Beth van Hoesen Teddy Bears," page 8, bear owner Stephen Drewes of San Francisco explains: "I found Princess Bear in 1996 and was immediately captivated by the notion of a teddy bear in gold lamé . Despite the title, bestowed by some of my students, P.B. is resolutely male--and secure enough in his masculinity not to feel self-conscious displaying the Ancestral Jewels. He changes them occasionally, but always retains his tiara. Princess Bear is surprisingly democratic."
