Walking home late on a warm summer evening after a concert at Northerly Island, a few stragglers still roamed the plaza around Buckingham Fountain, waiting for the center jet to spout high. I was struck by how the fountain cooled the air and made the Georgia pink marble glow behind the water and lights. In turn, the water caught the lights of the city behind it, making a rainbow of greens, pinks and aquas cascading down from 150 feet in the air. This quintessential Chicago scene takes on new life after sunset, a rare view for all but us late night wanderers.
