I painted “whimsy” from memories based on a view from one of my favorite places on the gulf islands that I have been lucky enough to have stayed at and visited multiple times. There is a path surrounded by salal bushes that brings you from forest to beach, and where the two meet, is a joined Or split tree with an old rope and wood swing. Just beyond the split tree and swing, on the driftwoodlined beach is a small lagoon. The little lagoon is fed by the ocean And all the little waterways seem to reachout everwhere In all directions and the colours of the waters and sky reflect in everything. The ever changing sky over the ocean is Also constantly reflected in the little lagoon and it was often difficult to know where one began and the other ended. The connection of waterways seemed to connect and flow into a forever beyond. This spot was one of contuity, reflection, beauty, whimsy and imagination. I’m not sure I adequately captured the magic that exists in my memories, but I’m glad I tried.
I had the joy and incredible experiencing of painting this work under the mentorship of Serge Dube
