Grace Lock is an Old Michalean, and is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most prominent photographers.

Grace Lock is represented in the NGV collection, was the first Australian woman to receive an Honorary Felowship from the British Royal Photography Society, and was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to Australian Photography, which was another first for an Australian Woman.

Another fascinating aspect of this particular artwork was discovered when dismantling the old frame in 2020. Found on the back of the photographs mount board was several stamps, representing many of the exhibitions that this piece was displayed in, and includes a “Winning Club Entry” sticker from the Victorian Association of Photographic Societies.
