- Acknowledging Ngarrindjeri Country, 2024
- Acrylic on canvas
Stacey Edwards is a Taungurung/Boon Wurrung woman working and making art in Naarm/Melbourne.
She began her journey as an artist through a program called The Torch, which supports First Nations people in developing their skills as artists and creating a pathway away from incarceration.
"I'm a registered Traditional Owner with Taungurung. Taungurung has always looked after me and accepted me as part of the 'tribe. I don't often acknowledge that Ngarrindjeri is from my mother's mother's side. This humpback whale reminds me of my grandmother's country on the Raukkan mission, near the Coorong where the river meets the ocean."
In 2024, the combination of a generous PCA grant and a Breen House Community Action Day raised funds so that the RAP Club and RAP Committee could buy artworks by local Indigenous artists. Breen House was particularly focused on supporting The Torch and the work they do to curb the high rate of incarceration of Indigenous people. The Torch has an annual exhibition at the Glen Eira Town Hall and a gallery now located in Carlton.
The works here, including this one, were purchased through this program.
