ABOUT THIS PRINT
Drawing was done directly on a plank of fir wood, probably with black conte crayon, and then reinforced with India ink. On the verso was a horizontal landscape image, titled Turnagain Chugach. Drawings on both sides of the fir plank were done on the same day in the McHugh Creek Park area south of Anchorage. All production work accomplished at the Visual Arts Center of Alaska. The artist's first two woodcuts in Alaska – one on each side of the woodblock plank.
PROCESS DESCRIPTION
Drawing on the plank, both sides of the woodblock, was reinforced with India ink before cutting the image in relief. The cutting tools were basic, Speedball Set No. 15, made in England of Sheffield Steel. The knife was used like a pen or pencil, drawing rapid strokes, across the fir wood, depressing and not cutting the soft part of the wood grain to accomplish the grayed appearance for the distant mountains. Image inked with small roller, printed on an etching press.
