A rendition of the iconic Madonna and Child, this piece represents the fusion of Cuba’s patron saint, the Virgin of Charity of El Cobre, and the Orisha, Oshun. Oshun is considered the mother of the twin deities Ibejí. Within the composition, Oshun, portrayed as the virgin, solemnly embraces the twins. This imagery draws from Oshun’s folklore, in which she abandons her twin offspring shortly after their birth for fear of judgment for being the first in existence to bear twins. This personal anecdote resonates with Elliot & Erick’s experience of motherhood, who themselves are twins.
