These chairs are part of a dining set. In them I saw a group of black women in service to the comfort of others. I wondered what if they were to liberate each other. These reproduction chairs (in an interpretative Hogarth style) contained the forms of black women. In doing these works, a kind of manifesto of liberation truths emerged that echoed some aspects of Audre Lourdes's "Sister Outsider" text but also enlarged upon that thesis. I feel this work is a tangible thesis of systemic liberation from systemic capitalistic objectification. From enabling these chairs to liberate each other, I learned five key things.
1. When I worked with each chair, it was clear that they were all doing different things. I thought about this and learned that liberational work is not always obvious. Some look like they are doing nothing, but being present for someone else to be liberated is also an action. Some are praying, and some are pulling. Each of these acts is valuable.
2. The seat pad was removed, so no one could sit there anymore, but the seat frame persisted. This frame meant the chairs could not get very close to each other facing forward. From this, I learned that the structures that enable the comfort of others at your expense will prevent you from getting too close to your sister. You will have to stretch across this structure to do the work.
3. Often, the chairs can only be assisted from behind because of the frame of the chair seat. From this, I learned that getting assistance in your own liberation will require you to trust someone, as you may not be able to see all of what is happening.
4. After liberating the chairs, the floor was littered with stumps of wood. The chair looked like a felled forest. From this, I learned that liberation will most likely be into a devastated environment. The same forces that bound and degraded you will have also bound and degraded your environment.
5 The set is incomplete. Not all the chairs made it, and not all of us will make it. Liberation exacts a high price we have to be prepared to pay.
I would like to handwrite a banner behind this work with 4 slogans:
1. Liberartional work is not always obvious. There are many ways to
assist.
2. You will have to stretch across existing structures (designed for
others comfort) to liberate.
3. liberation requires you trust your sister help might be happening
behind your back.
4. Liberation will be into a devastated environment. The same forces
that bound and degraded you will have also bound and degraded your
environment.
5. Liberation exacts sacrifice we have to be prepared to give up.
