This saturated close-up of a split-flap display, or Solari board, came after SFAI’s closure and the transformative dark nights of soul it evoked. My spirit did not see transferring to another art school as an option. It felt like I was in a liminal lobby, waiting for the display sign to flip and tell me what to do next. At the time of the exhibit I had begun my second semester at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) and found myself in gratitude for the unplanned, twisty-turny path it took for me to find an aligned direction.
Choices for the color palette, angle, and composition were intentionally designed to illuminate the sense of being disoriented and unclear, with a sense of whimsy on the horizon.
