Bianca Lago
San Francisco, CA
I am Some Lady. I use visual art and performance to observe, feel, and express themes around psychology and the nature of existence.
MessageSome Lady is writing this in the third person as biographies imply that another person is writing on behalf of the person in question; in this way I choose to honor the history of biography while showcasing my clever wit and skill in highlighting the humor in *most* things (typically achieved alongside a vulnerable disclosure of sorts).
Some Lady lives and works in San Francisco. She received her Bachelors in Studio Art at Cal-Poly Humboldt, along with a post-baccalaureate certification in Museum & Gallery Practices via an internship with the Morris Graves Museum of Art. Some attended the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) for her MFA and was sadly part of the final class to attend before the school's closure in 2022. Some is currently finishing her Masters degree in Counseling Psychology and the California Institute for Integral Studies (CIIS) with plans to combine elements of physiology into forms of public art that foster civic engagement.
When she isn't creating or studying for classes, Some enjoys long contemplative walks in nature, yoga, spending time with friends and family, reading, caring for her plants, contemplating the working mechanisms of the cosmos, making friends with animals and plants, talks with the wind, pattern recognition, and exploring altered states of consciousness via breath work, meditation, trance-like flow states, and the like. Some is insatiably curious about the state of the world, history through an art history lens, and theorizing which creative and/or healing modalities are most effective in the micro-level with the highest potential to reflect in the macro-level.
Some Lady plans to continue her studious pursuits and research-driven creative practice in perpetuity. Her ultimate goal is to organize community-focused public art events around the world that explores various points of interest around the central theme of empowering others and raising consciousness. In the meantime, Some is enjoying the journey of gathering the necessary knowledge and tools while becoming the version of my that is best equipped to steward these dreams in reality.
Statement
My parents and the government call me Bianca Lago, my artist name is Some Lady. I live and work in San Francisco as an artist, muralist, and expressive arts therapist (in training). “Some Lady” comes from the notion that creations don’t necessarily belong to me, that identity politics can get in the way of conveying a concept. Artists are conduits, in touch with the divine, channeling ideas and bringing them to life. If I make something that impacts another, it is simply because I had the good fortune of tuning in to the energies around me and the privilege to make it exist in the world. Bianca is important and matters; Some Lady is not the point of focus, the conceptualization of a frequency I experienced is where I’d like to direct attention.
Art is the vehicle that connects me to myself, others, and the world at large; a means to process information and share those findings. When working with others I believe in using a trauma-informed approach rooted in feminist theory. I approach art-making with a working-class philosophy, making accessibility a priority and valuing the wisdom outside of academia. My visual works are a form of ideological advertising and my performance work is a means to practice those ideologies and philosophies.
My current paintings use spiral imagery and symbolism to document the evolution of my exploration in weaving a thread between hermetic principles, Buddhist teachings, Jungian psychology, absurdist philosophy, cultural anthropology, feminist theories, and my own life experiences. Each creative outlet informs the other. Murals, therapy, paintings, and performing are important individually and crucial collectively. Engaging with art brings people together, cultivates feelings of belonging, and alters consciousness. Aesthetic engagement is a necessary link in the chain of connection to ourselves and those around us.
