Log Cabin with Nine Patch Centers

This Log Cabin quilt is a variation of the popular vintage design. The story goes that the red center represents a fire in the chimney. This artist designed the center with a simple 9-patch block of red and white, and built strips of light and dark fabric around it. Each of the completed blocks are the same, but have been arranged to show lightning-like slashes in a bold design.

The identity of the maker is not known, but perhaps she is a woman. Her art represents her personality, which shows care and pride of workmanship. She is precise with her placement of color in the reds for the “dark” pieces. The design arrangement is unusual and bold—perhaps she is, too.
