Exploring Space
Like most people, during the long months during the pandemic lockdowns, I used the extra time to sort through stuff at home and at the studio. As a result, I became interested in the organization of space both in my life and in my art. These observations manifested in this series of paintings.
My usual preference is to work entirely from an organic perspective. However, I do enjoy using an underlying grid sometimes as a compositional framework. It was exciting, with this series, to explore what I could do with it.
Just as in all my work, I use multiple layers of collage and paint to create visual complexity. When looking at these paintings, it’s like digging for buried treasure. They represent an organic excavation of what lies hidden under the surface.
Forces of Nature
The ‘Forces of Nature’ inspired by my sensitivity to the energy we all feel when we observe nature. The wind, the stars, the earth, and water all revive our spirits. It's that internal feeling of deep connection that motivates me to capture it in paint.
These are only a few of the paintings from ‘Forces of Nature’. Over the years, I’ve painted and sold a few hundred in this series. The sizes ranged from small framed pieces to large scale canvases.
Small Works
Before beginning a large scale body of work, I often create small works to warm up. This serves to get me in the flow by testing colors and compositions.
The Colors Within
My work springs from an internal response to the energies swirling around me. With post-pandemic restrictions loosening up, I seemed to loosen up also. The previous geometric work gradually began to open up and my strokes became looser and less controlled. I found aspects of my earlier work from 2010-2017 becoming visible.
This has resulted in a my most recent body of work that is far more painterly than my previous paintings. I feel increasingly connected to an inner force that seems to select colors and move my hand on the canvas. It's so exciting to sense this internal energy becoming visible as my paintings take shape.
My painting are created with multiple layers and when you look closely, you begin to see the magic of the "colors within".
