Always on the lookout for amusing images, I discovered this antique wire basket tucked in the back room of a cluttered antique mall. Stuffed haphazardly inside were a flock of vintage pink flamingos—cheap plastic nostalgia crammed into a metal nest. What truly caught my eye, though, was the faded sign attached to the basket: Layaway available. The absurdity of putting a plastic lawn flamingo on layaway made me laugh out loud. Amused, I began rearranging the birds, playing with their positions until they all seemed to be gazing out at the viewer, united in their kitschy defiance.
