I love the way the clouds make beautiful navy blue shadows on the mountains as they float by making so many abstract shapes! In this plein air piece my goal was to study the color of that navy blue without painting it navy blue. I started with a grisaille underpainting to establish my values and perspective in order to lock in the shapes of those clouds as soon as I liked it for my composition. A limited palette of Cadmium Lemon, Alizarin Permanent, Ultramarine Blue, Gamblin's Quick Dry White and Van Dyke Brown was used adding the use of Radiant White at the end.
