Statement
Animals are a big part of my life story and I am most passionate about creating art that explores the stories of their lives and characters in situations that are often realistic, and, at times, imagined and allegorical. I have recently enjoyed exploring canines in dog portraits done for friends and by commission. New work will continue to explore the world of dogs, but will also branch out to other species and settings.
My style is representational and reflects my strong interest in drawing. The beloved transparent inks that I used in my earliest works are no longer available, so working in transparent oil color was a natural progression for me and is the current focus of my creative efforts.
I like the versatility of the Venetian indirect method of painting best. I start most of my work with a light drawing using transparent colors on a white substrate, most often a panel. I then build alternate layers of opaque and transparent colors, usually finishing the work with glazed colors. This creates optical colors that have a lovely glow that is best seen in person.
