Pattern and color– they’re both exciting and compelling. I love watching my hand-dyed yarns, with their slight variations, come to life as I weave, to see them juxtaposed against the adjoining color, to enjoy the vibrant, energetic color. And then add pattern to the mix. It’s all around us. The stingray’s markings of white spots on a black background, the arch of a bridge and its vertical supports, pre-Columbian drawings, the shapes of trees, prairie grasses, shadows on a path—all of these are the beginnings of a possible ikat or tapestry design. They bounce around in my head, go into my sketchbook, and eventually get refined. They may become a weaving now or they may need a few more months of simmering to really meld into abstract art.
