Sharon Walker’s art is a conversation between layers—of paint, of memory, of experience—whispering stories of transformation and connection. Born in London and now based in Atlanta, her journey across continents has shaped her deep fascination with identity’s fluidity and the invisible threads linking people and places. A keen observer, she translates these insights into vivid, textured compositions that hint at life’s hidden depths. Self-taught and endlessly curious, Sharon embraces an intuitive process of layering and tearing away, revealing what lies beneath. Using paint, textured mediums, and reclaimed materials, her work bridges the tangible and the abstract, inviting viewers on a journey of self-discovery and deeper awareness of the intricate connections that bind us all.
Statement
My work is an exploration of layers—both physical and metaphorical. Using paper as a reclaimed material, I create textured surfaces that are rich with depth and complexity. Each layer represents a moment, a story, or an energy that has shaped what is visible on the surface.
The process of layering, tearing, and revealing mirrors the interplay between what is seen and what lies hidden beneath. Just as the surface of an individual or a society reflects visible traits and narratives, the unseen layers carry equal weight, shaping and informing the whole. My work seeks to expose these connections, acknowledging the influence of what often goes unnoticed yet remains profoundly relevant.
Nature plays a vital role in this exploration. Paper, a product derived from trees—the lungs of our planet—is both a symbol and a material in my practice. By reclaiming what was once discarded, I highlight the cyclical relationship between human beings and the natural world. This act of repurposing serves as a metaphor for renewal and transformation, emphasizing our responsibility to recognize and honor our interdependence with nature.
Through this process, I examine themes of identity, resilience, and transformation. The textures and materials invite viewers to consider their own layers and the interconnectedness of the collective. By blending the reclaimed with the created, my work serves as both a reflection and an inquiry into the layers that define us, while also underscoring the delicate balance between humanity and the environment.
