A Break From Reality
Surrealism: in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself.
My mixed media series entitled "A Break From Reality" is exactly that. It is giving the viewer a break form the everyday local and global issues we face today. These odd and curious pieces do not seem so out of the norm, especially when the world around is battling a pandemic, war, natural catastrophes, political unrest and so much more.
Finding Balance
A series of encaustic artwork all about balance. We try to balance so much in our lives that at times it feels like we are about to tip over. Balancing work, relationships, roles in our family, finances, home and so much more. This series of work captures that in an abstract and modern way.
Framed
What started at one piece grew into a series. Each artwork "frames" a unique element and then the edges are finished with lines and patterns. What frame speaks to you?
Interchange
The new abstract encaustic collection began with inspiration from Pantone’s 2023 color of the year, Viva Magenta. Pantone describes the color as “bold and fearless, a pulsating color who exuberance promotes a joyous & optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”
Viva magenta does just that within the encaustic artworks. The bold & fearless texture of the wax sends out an invitation to your tactile senses, even though you know you shouldn’t touch the artwork.
The collection allows you to write your own narrative. As humans we exchange ideas and information with one another, it’s one of the more beautiful elements of life. With this collection, you can freely interchange the artwork to create a new energy & mood. My hope with this collection is for you to see there is always more than one possibility. Live boldly, fearlessly all while filled with joy & optimism. Write your story.
Into the Garden
A series of mixed media artwork incorporating vintage objects, floral backdrops and images of butterflies. The garden is a peaceful place for anyone who enters it. Take the time to relax and enjoy the sounds, smells and sights of nature.
Photography Encaustics
A series of photographs I have captured in the midwest, each layered with encaustic medium to create a dreamy and vintage feel. Each piece is unique and tells a story about days gone by.
Polaroid Transfers
I turn images I have taken into Polaroids and then transfer them on to different materials. Polaroid transfers are a slow process that’s involves being in the moment. Each one is unique and one of a kind. The medium fits with the vintage and antique subject matter found in my home state of Wisconsin. Where old world values hold strong. By using new technology to create an analog technique is part of the juxtaposition of the work.
The Space Between
The dark colors next to bright ones symbolize hidden feelings next to moments of joy and happiness. The rough texture in areas represent the layers of fear, guilt, & disappointment that we all harbor from one another. We all create space between one another from not expressing our thoughts, feelings and experiences. The artwork symbolizes how close we are too connecting to one another. My goal is to help individuals open up to share and speak what they are feeling to allow their light to shine through.
Web of Life
The spider web is a symbol of fate, our existence, and how life brings people together in an unforeseeable way. We do not always know how things are going to end up, but with each step we take we are weaving a web that is interconnected. It draws our attention to the choices we make throughout our lives which can affect not just us, but others around us. Whatever you put into motion will eventually catch up with you. Your actions matter whether they are conscious decisions made by yourself or something beyond your control.
The collection, Web Of Life, explores the symbolism of the web through mixed media abstract encaustics. I am intrigued with symbolism and how it speaks to us unconsciously. These symbols can guide our decision making when we are in tune with our true self and not distracted by outside elements.
The web is symbolic as a protective force that bings together all living things. The art work encourages viewers to look at their own web and see the vigilant forces that bind together all living things.
Each step we take adds to the web and its interconnectedness transcends dimensions. Each piece of the web belongs to every other piece, just as the artwork does. No matter where you go or who else has been trapped within it previously, it is all interconnected.
We are all individuals in our own homes, which tend to weave a way through life. We make decisions that affect who we become and how things turn out for us–our home is the place where everything happens; it’s also what shapes you into someone new or leaves an impression on their psyche forevermore after they’ve left its confines.
The spider web is a symbol of our existence and how we go about living it. We do not always know where things are going to end up, but each step that we take matters in some way because it affects what happens next when weaving through life’s challenges or particular obstacles. This can be seen as an act of fate or destiny which means whatever you put into motion will eventually catch up with you so all your actions matter whether they’re conscious decisions made by yourself or something beyond your control!
