What I paint is what I am. Every painting is in one way or another a self-portrait. Since what I am changes from day to day, and from year to year, what I paint changes too. I happily admit to the sin of inconsistency, and just as happily quote somebody famous who said ‘”consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds”. Nowadays it is considered very necessary to acquire a ‘style’, meaning a technical formula for painting. Real style comes not from a technique of painting, but from a philosophy of seeing and of living. Bonnard had real style because he had no style at all. His individuality was a result of a vision, not of a clever brush stroke.
