Blue Continuum, purchased in 1978, is a different kind of experience. Rather than being a superimposed network which seeks to orient us on a mysterious inexplicit ground (as in Series II, #5), the grid in Blue Continuum operates as a given. It provides the structure from which the picture evolves. Self-sticking labels were arranged in a rectilinear format which hovers well within the confines of the paper. Over this arrangement thin acrylic paint is washed in and after a bit, removed. This process is repeated several times and includes the border area. At certain intervals, some labels are removed, and the resulting ‘stenciled’ passages lightly washed with paint. The idea of taking a highly organized, essentially inert pattern and using it to document movement, change progression is appealing to me.

The mission of the South Carolina Arts Commission is to promote access to the arts and support the cultivation of creativity in South Carolina. We envision a South Carolina where the arts are valued and all people benefit from a variety of creative experiences.

A state agency created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the SCAC works to increase public participation in the arts through grants, direct programs, staff assistance and partnerships in artist development, arts industry, arts learning, creative placemaking, and folklife and traditional arts. Headquartered in Columbia, S.C., the SCAC is funded by the state of South Carolina, by the federal government through the National Endowment for the Arts, and other sources.
