Historically clay has been associated with the vessel’s utilitarian purpose. I have chosen to redefine the vessel in terms of the 20th Century; i.e. a surface both receptive and reflective of painterly and sculptural concepts.
The choice of the double-walled vessel immediately removes the form from any association with utilitarian prejudice. The function is not that of a bowl, but rather a surface that draws the viewer/participant into close inspection. The cut-outs provide a visual passage from the exterior surface wall around, through, and within the vessel. The surface is activated with subtle colors that invite the viewer to see what is and what is not.
