“I tried to design the subject and yet give it atmosphere. I choose the subject that has gone through the element of nature, thus, in turn, giving it character. I simplify the subject to its basic patterns, sometimes isolating it from its surroundings. I saw this building near Lancaster, South Carolina, in a state of disrepair but with character that made it an interesting subject for me to paint. I suppose this building has long since been torn down and I was glad to record it as a passing phase of Americana.”
